Lactoferrin and SSAV (Super-Strength Aloe Vera): Why the Two Pair Well

Two Capsules, Two Different Jobs

Every capsule of our Human Lactoferrin already contains 40 mg of SSAV (Super-Strength Aloe Vera). A day of SSAV 180 is six capsules, or 3,600 mg, which is 90 times as much. So if the Lactoferrin capsule already carries SSAV, why would anyone take both?

Because the two amounts do different jobs. The 40 mg rides along as a carrier. The 3,600 mg is a daily Aloe Vera foundation in its own right.

And the lactoferrin itself does something else again: it is a protein built to hold and move iron. Here is each job in turn, where the two meet, and how people fit both into one day.

Job One: Iron, Carried Carefully

Iron sits close to the center of everyday energy. According to MedlinePlus, from the National Library of Medicine, the body needs iron to make hemoglobin and myoglobin, the proteins that carry oxygen in red blood cells and in muscle.

Midlife changes the math. MedlinePlus names women with heavy periods among those at risk of low iron, and The Menopause Society notes that in perimenopause, blood flow may be heavier or lighter than before. Then, from age 51, the Recommended Dietary Allowance of iron for women drops from 18 mg a day to 8 mg. Across those years the aim is balance: enough iron, held safely and delivered where it is needed, rather than simply more of it.

That is the job lactoferrin is built for. It is an iron-binding protein, and a 2009 review from the University of California, Davis points out that until recently, human lactoferrin from breast milk was the only significant dietary source. The review describes intestinal cells taking lactoferrin up through a dedicated receptor pathway, and notes it has been shown to enhance iron status in infants and pregnant women.

One distinction matters: lactoferrin is not an iron pill. Our capsule lists no iron on its Supplement Facts panel.

Job Two: A Daily Aloe Vera Foundation for the Gut

SSAV is a 200:1 concentrate of inner-leaf Aloe Vera, freeze-dried by a patented cold process and free of anthraquinones. That last detail matters for anything taken every day. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that Aloe Vera latex, from the leaf's outer layer, can cause abdominal pain, cramps and diarrhea when taken orally, and that decolorized extract is passed through activated carbon to take out its anthraquinone components.

What stays behind is the inner gel's polysaccharides, above all acemannan, a long chain of mannose sugars. In a 2015 laboratory study, researchers fermented Aloe Vera mucilage with gut bacteria from six healthy donors and measured the short-chain fatty acids and bacterial populations used to judge a prebiotic. Their findings supported Aloe Vera mucilage as a possible prebiotic ingredient.

That was a test-tube model, not a human trial. Still, it is part of why research suggests SSAV's polysaccharides may help support a balanced gut, and why many people take SSAV as a daily habit.

Where the Two Jobs Meet

Both products do their work in the same place: the gut. Lactoferrin's iron handling begins at receptors in the small intestine, while SSAV's polysaccharides are the kind of fiber gut bacteria ferment. They complement each other rather than overlap, which is why the pairing makes sense.

The carrier is the second meeting point. Our Human Lactoferrin utilizes our potent SSAV as a carrier to enhance absorption. The idea has a research basis. In a small 2005 crossover study of 8 and 10 healthy volunteers, two liquid Aloe Vera preparations taken with vitamin C or vitamin E slowed their absorption, so blood levels peaked 2 to 4 hours later and the vitamins stayed in the plasma longer.

The researchers concluded that the Aloe Vera preparations improved absorption of both vitamins, though for vitamin C the overall difference between groups was not statistically significant. That study tested vitamins, not lactoferrin. It explains the reasoning behind the carrier rather than measuring our capsule.

The human-identical part matters too. Many lactoferrin supplements use the bovine form, taken from cow's milk. Ours uses effera®, a human-identical lactoferrin that is dairy-free.

Fitting Both Into One Day

The labels keep the routine simple. Human Bioidentical Lactoferrin is one capsule daily, in the morning on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before breakfast. SSAV starts at six capsules a day, three in the morning and three in the evening, each serving with a glass of liquid. It can be taken with or without food, and with food is a good choice for a sensitive stomach.

A practical detail: both bottles last 30 days at those amounts. Human Lactoferrin holds 30 capsules and SSAV 180 holds 180, so they run out together and reorder together. Be patient with SSAV. Many people give it three months of consistent use before deciding how it fits their routine.

Check with your provider first if you take an iron supplement, because lactoferrin can raise iron levels and yours should be monitored. The same goes for antibiotics or immunosuppressants, which lactoferrin can make less effective. Our guide to who should check before taking lactoferrin covers the details, and any change in bleeding during midlife deserves a conversation with a clinician rather than an assumption.

Desert Harvest has made Aloe Vera supplements since 1993, and SSAV remains the only Aloe Vera supplement named in the International Painful Bladder Foundation's global IC/BPS guidelines. Human Lactoferrin may help support iron balance and everyday energy, and SSAV may help support a balanced gut. Talk to your healthcare provider to see whether this pairing fits your wellness plan.
